Past Voices, Future Choices: Subject Reviews from past MUEES students

Undergraduate
ENEN30001
Environmental Engineering System Capstone
Water Sensitive Urban Design, Data Analysis, Report Writing
Comments:
As Andrew mentioned at the beginning there aren’t a lot of new contents but mostly learning how to write a formal report including data analysis from scratch. Overall the subject is not difficult, but can require quite a bit of effort, especially for data analysis if you are not very familiar.
Advice for future students:
Start early and ask questions, don’t leave the assignments last minute.
Semester 2, 2021
ENEN30002
Introduction to Sustainable Water Management
Hydrology, Modelling, Water
Comments:
This subject involved a component that was based on Chinese history. At times it felt more like a history subject than an environmental one, due to CCP links. The Australian lecturers and lecturers were top notch and knew what they were talking about. This was completely essay based and I personally did not really like the subject. However it is easy to score well in it!
Advice for future students:
Great subject if you are interested in water.
Semester 1, 2021
ENEN30003
Environmental Systems Modelling & Design
Modelling, Report Writing
Comments:
The workshops are good, can ask questions about the assignments. Tutors are nice! The content is a bit boring. Teachers only taught a little skills, but the assignments are hard.
Advice for future students:
This subjects requires some content from ENEN20002, such as water catchment calculation. Find a good team mate 🙂
Semester 2, 2021
MAST20031
Analysis of Biological Data
Modelling, Coding, Ecology, Statistics
Comments:
Somewhat challenging at first but really great for getting a broad overview of statistics and experimental analysis that will be very useful moving forward. The biological context makes learning it a lot more interesting than straight statistics as well.
Advice for future students:
Maintain a documents summarizing the main concepts as you go and make sure to engage the lecturers, they are really knowledgeable and can explain things in terms you can understand!
Semester 1, 2021
Comments:
Useful subject that teaches how to analyse data, both manually and through the use of R. Some difficult concepts and some of the pre-recorded lectures can be confusing.
Advice for future students:
Attend all of the tutorials, as the final exam questions were of a similar difficulty. Make sure your notes are easy to understand and keep track of the main formulas.
Semester 1, 2021
Postgraduate
ENEN90031
Quantitative Environmental Modelling
Modelling, Coding
Comments:
Good subject, a bit of a disconnect between assessment and lectures.
Advice for future students:
You could miss lectures, you CAN’T miss tutorials.
Semester 1, 2021
Comments:
This was a challenging but very valuable subject. I found learning to code in python very difficult, however it will be very helpful when working in industry.
Advice for future students:
Be organised with the assignments, these are very difficult when they are left to the last minute.
Semester 1, 2021
Comments:
When compared to other coding subjects, this one was easier to follow. Tutorials were useful, contained all of the information needed for assignments.
Advice for future students:
Ensure you attend the tutorials, especially prior to starting assignments.
Semester 1, 2021
ENEN90038
Engineering Hydrology
Hydrology
Comments:
Well organised and interesting topics.
Advice for future students:
Get feedback from tutors before submitting assignments.
Semester 1, 2021
ENGR90024
Computational Fluid Dynamics
Coding, Fluid Dynamics, Maths
Comments:
Highly interesting subject, very well taught and organised. Quite difficult.
Advice for future students:
Not environmental related, only recommend this subject to students who really enjoyed fluid mechanics and have a background in coding. Additionally, a solid understanding of vector calculus + some differential equations would be beneficial.
Semester 1, 2021
GEOM90042
Spatial Information Programming
Coding, geospatial, data analysis
Comments:
Interesting subject, sometimes difficult to understand what is required from assignments.
Advice for future students:
Helpful to directly email coordinator and ask what he wants from assignments, e.g. get clarity about specific questions if unsure. Discussion board sometimes difficult to get a response from.
Semester 1, 2021
Comments:
Interesting subject, steep learning curve if you lack a coding background. However, it was largely rewarding and taught coding practices which will be useful in the future.
Advice for future students:
Ask for help when necessary, the coordinator and tutors are eager to assist. Give yourself ample time to start and complete the assignments, you will be rewarded for the effort you put in.
