Throughout the study and exam period of semester 1, 2021, MUEES, in collaboration with MUCSS, hosted several study sessions for students of subjects related to environmental engineering. These subjects were: Fluid Mechanics, Engineering Risk Analysis, Earth Processes for Engineering, and Analysis of Biological Data. The aim of these sessions was to foster discussion between students regarding concepts and problems related to the subjects. A representative from each club jointly ran the sessions, working to initiate and maintain these discussions. The sessions were conducted online to accommodate students studying remotely as well as those studying locally.
The sessions were originally planned to be conducted through Discord, but due to very high attendance to the first session, fluid mechanics, the decision was made to move all sessions over to Zoom. While attendance to the fluid mechanics session was by far the largest, all sessions saw great discussion, collaboration, and learning between students. For each session we chose a past exam to go through together, helping each other with any questions we had along the way. While most sessions were only planned to go for an hour, students were so engaged in discussion that many went on for significantly longer!
By and large these study sessions were great successes. Attendance was generally very good, the discussions were great, and the students were given a chance to make connections with their peers. We received some great feedback afterwards from attendees commenting on how useful they found them. Most importantly, these sessions proved to be great learning experiences for us. We learned a lot about promoting, planning for, and running sessions like these, and we hope to bring you even bigger and better study sessions in the future!
